One thing that I like to keep in mind is that a novel is never going to be perfect. There is just going to be a point when it is time to stop working on it. But some novels are going to be closer to be closer to perfect then others.
Your first novel is never going to be your best work. That does not mean that it will be horrible or not a good piece of writing. It just means that you will get better at writing as you go on.
I mean if you look at your old work from childhood there is a big difference right? And even if you look at your work from a year or two ago you can see a difference.
So your first novel is not going to change that.
But that does not mean that you should wait to publish your first novel.
If you have had it read over by others and have had it professionally edited then it is as good as its going to get.
If you think that it’s a good book, and that you like how it turned out. Then you should publish it.
And you will see that you only get better from there.
And you can put that experience and improvement to write your next novel.
But if you are not feeling confident on this novel. If you don’t feel like this is as good as you are going to get then write a new novel.
But don’t throw it out, keep that work and look back on it after you have grown your writing ability and see how much has changed.
And see if you want to work on that old writing and make it into something great, something to be proud of.
